Oxytocin, Serotonin, Dopamine

Dogs?

Oh, my.

Pets. They are cute. They make us laugh with their silly antics. They help us gain a sense of responsibility. They keep us active. They show us unconditional love.

What about Mental health?

Spending time with your pet is a relaxing, enjoyable way to reduce stress.

Some time back I started worrying about my dog. She just wasn’t being herself. She was following me everywhere. She clung by my side. Leaned in to me. Wanted on my lap as soon as I sat down…

Now, she loves me and is often near, but this was different behavior; somehow more urgent. I was considering taking her to the vet, when one evening as she sat on my lap, snuggled into my chest – I realized, it wasn’t her, it was me.

Her different behavior was because of my own altered state. She could sense it and had gone into doggie overdrive.

I had a lot going on and was dealing with anxiety and stress.

Did you know that cuddling your pet releases oxytocin? Oxytocin is typically linked to warm, fuzzy feelings and is often nicknamed the “love hormone.” It can also induce anti-stress-like effects such as reduction of blood pressure and cortisol levels.

On the other hand, playing with your pet will release serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin makes you feel good about yourself, stirring up confidence and self-esteem. Dopamine is responsible for allowing you to feel pleasure, satisfaction and motivation.

A session with your pet can do wonders for your mental health!

…and did I mention — they’re oh so cute?
